Stalking rifle
« on: March 30, 2016, 12:17:05 PM »
I'll bet there aren't too many who have seen a bunch of these lying around! This is a German Stalking rifle, very slender and light weight. It was used for small to medium game.

Thanks Kirk. Yes, it does kinda look like a Ruger, but very much lighter.
Folding rear sight blades and barrel markings.

Pretty cool, yeah it does remind me of a Ruger too. Wouldn't mind having a #1 in 45-70.

Open breech and showing the sliding safety. The rifle has a slender tapered octagon barrel, and is chambered in 8.15 X 46Rmm.

I like the little rifles.  The Germans and the English perfected the hunting rifles, especially the single shots.  Very light and agile to use yet chambered in decent cartridges or chamberings.  I got to handle a 6 pound English stalking rifle that was cut for a 50 caliber roundball.  The powder charge was 130 grains of black powder and the rifling pitch was one turn in 400 calibers (1/200").  They considered it the proper deer rifle for 200 yards and under.  It led to the development of the Express cartridges.  I also am aware of a Whitworth stalking rifle, about 6 pounds and cut for the 451 hexagonal bullet.
