Screwdrivers for Pietta Navy..
« on: May 14, 2016, 01:17:41 PM »
Have any thoughts? I want to clean the guns more completely on occasion .. But am a little concerned about damaging the screws... My random assortment aquired over the years doesn't seem to be a great fit...and as I learned in my Dads service station, long ago and far away when cars did not have computers.. The right tool makes all the difference...

Grace and Brownell make the nicest hollow ground.  Got to be hollow ground though.

The Colt Single Action screwdriver set from Brownells works on all replica C&B revolvers

Anything hollow ground will be sufficient. That, and when you put it back together the second time, don't emulate Guido the Gorilla and torque them tighter than a miser's purse.

Also be sure to put some kind of anti-sieze lube on the nipple threads otherwise they can become very hard to get out. I use Tetra Gun Grease and I think Birchwood-Casey Choke Tube Lube is another good brand.

My biggest concern is that when I pass away, my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Kirk,
That cracked me up....and that is exactly the issue I am facing and was afraid to damage the screws with an ill fitting driver.
I greatly appreciate everyone's help!

Very prudent of you Suntiger.

Buggered screws on an otherwise nice piece is a heart break and a shame to see.  I have avoided that bummer and wish that everyone had.  My (our) first suggestion to all new owners is to get the right screwdrivers.

The links above for the Grace set and the BrownellÂ’s are very apt. I have just ordered three sets of the Brownell five bit item ($8.54/set).  I have two sons and a nephew that need something to take afield with their C&B shooters.  Now they will have just the thing.

Thanks guys.

Be aware the the standard Pietta screws are extremely soft. I don't generally use anti-seize on the screw threads...I do use Rem Oil though. And I always use an anti seize on the nipples on re-installation, though Misto Johnnie would call me a fool for doing so. L@J

I may get some delivered on Monday.  Suntiger - did you order the set with the driver or just the bits?

The set with the driver,.... Apparently all the bits but 1 can store in the handle ...with the last kept in the shaft, but it's magnetic so it will not cause me any worries to toss it in my range box as a unit.. Very satisfied with it

Well , the set works great. Found a video by Mike Beliveau on line , and I think this is the first time I have ever taken a handgun complete down to every screw and part..did find one old cap part inside one of them..nice thing about the video is he also tells you which bit he is using
