Removing Cylinder Engraving

Have any of you removed the engraving from a Leech & Rigdon cylinder, and if so, how did you do it? Did the cylinder still function correctly afterward?

I would mount it on an arbor and spin it on a lathe using a file to remove the engraving. However, I don't know what the thickness of the metal is on the outside of the chambers and if you go too far you'll weaken the walls.
