Hi Antique, the only issue for modifying any BP revolver to use modern ammo is that you turn an unregulated revolver into an FFL regulated firearm. There is no issue if you intend to always own that modified revolver, but if you ever want to sell or transfer ownership, you have to go through the government BS.

So far I have not modified any of my revolvers and choose to use the simple conversion cylinder methods to avoid getting the government involved. Do I hate government intrusion? You bet I do!!

Different strokes for different folks.

I know that really seams to be an issue with some folks,
simple solution is a $15 brass frame and all is okay,
which is what this one was to start with.
Just switch it back and it's a C&B revolver again.
Looks like the only way I'm going to get a Colt in 44 Colt Original is to build it myself.
I thought some folks would like to look over the plans for the 1851, after I finally found them.

Hi Richard-
while it is useful to warn folks of the various "Federal stuff" , bear in mind that many of us live in "free states" where private transfers and face-to-face sales are not regulated by the Fed.

Further, many of us ( I for one) have written orders in place for the correct dispersal upon our demise -
for example:  place my "self made permanent remington conversions" in my hands, in the coffin, and don't bother to try to get the grin off my face!  LOL.

 It's nice living in a country that observes (to certain degrees) our right to own and  even to manufacture our own firearms (to the chagrin of others it almost seems). I guess some folks can't get passed the fact that others don't necessarily see our hobby or have the same interests as they think we should.  How dare us !!

Ah mike, all you need is a handsaw, plane and some good pine boards! altho I would want to build one with more shoulder room so I can have the
"pistols in hand across the chest" pose....


Oh, you meant .... right.
don't need a lathe, my plan is using Kirst cylinders only, and building my own "ported thick plate" using hand tools and a belt sander/grinder.
I am sticking with .45 colt for simplicity, but the .44 Heeled Colt is not much harder.

I'll post some of the pics I saved from the other feller's project.

here we go... We can see he was using the Colt Richards Conversion book!
turns out a milling machine would be great, but you don't need a lathe of you use Kirst cylinders, which I prefer since they are very precise and stronger than the original italian cylinders ....


dang all the other files are too big... I'll have to reedue them tommorrow and upload them for posterity....

Thanks Prof,   I'm interested.   I'm also looking for an excuse reason to buy a lathe or maybe one of those mini milling machines.   I used to use tools like that once in a while a long time ago.

normally, i would just load the photos into one of the online buckets and post a link.
but that is what the other fellow did and now they are gone, except that I saved off the entire thread including photos, anticipating this very event.

resizing each to under ~ 150kb for upload is taking a tish more than anticipated, please stand bye.

mike, I bought a 10x26 Grizzly lathe first (for ~ $900 delievered), then got an insanely good deal on a HF benchtop mill at $300 delivered!

I find I am using the mill more than the lathe, but that is due to my own lack of education....
