Dave, do you happen to know either the projected PSI or CUP readings of your BP loads?

I sure don't Capt. I've actually looked around for a way to figure out the approximate pressure but couldn't find anything.
I've been told BP has a completely different pressure spike than smokeless. Since these guns were originally designed for BPCR, I want to ensure any smokeless loads don't overstress the receiver/barrel threads.
Smokeless loads with Unique can range from 5,600 CUP (5.0gr) up to 12,500 CUP (8.6gr). That's a lot of variance.
I'm ready to start loading, but I'm unsure of a starting point. 5.0gr is only in the 7xx fps range.

Does it have the Imperial Chrysanthemum Seal on it? I'm asking for a friend.

Normally, I would assume that any factory load acceptable for a gun produced in 1978 would be fine. However, as we've seen with the brass revolvers, even though the cylinder and barrel can handle as much PB as you can stuff down the ol' sewer pipes, most of the damage occurs at the brass frame and recoil shield. (Just ask Hawg if you don't believe me!)
I could always start at the bottom (5.0gr) and work up, but by the time I noticed any damage it would likely be too late.

Oddly enough, there's no Japanese writing on it anywhere.

I think your assumption would be correct Capt. These guns are made for modern smokeless ammo. But I will say this, most of the CAS guys are running "Cowboy loads" in their guns. The ammo just has to make power factor of 60 and minimum of 400 fps.

The max is 1400 fps for rifles.

A quick little update.

I finally got to shoot the Winchester today. Boy oh boy, what a sweetheart!

Here's a little video if anyone's interested.

I'll do an in depth report shortly. I'm just too pooped tonight.
