Finished this up last week
« on: May 28, 2019, 10:05:54 PM »
Somebody wanted a matching holster for his new Holy Smoker. Not sure I quite pulled it off, but I got pretty close. I'd hate to tell you how much time I had in this, but I learned a hell of a lot.

Wasn't really sure where to put this, but kind of wanted to show it off. I'd never done a holster from a "store bought" pattern before, but it sure helped for the tooling part of the project. Had a lot of fun doing it....

I liked it so much that I'm going to do one for my SR1911.....

Good job Mick.   Is that a "pickled" finish or dyed?

Hi Mick, beautiful, very handsome! How long have you been doing leatherwork?

Regards,
Richard

Hey Mike...it's dyed. retouched, different colors, sanded lightly with 2000 grit, redyed...resanded....etc. It took quite a while to get the right look. That "patina" part took longer than the tooling by far.

Hey Richard.... not too very long. I'm still learning as I go. But I'm fortunate to have a great resource in the cowboys in Tombstone. They get holsters at a pretty good price and I get to learn while they cover my costs.

I definitely can't take credit for the tooling design, just the tooling...which is the easier part. It's the only store bought pattern I've ever used....and I feel a bit guilty about it, but I did compensate the original designer fairly handsomely for the right to use it.

As for the 1911 holster.......that pistol has always been a looker...but in a good western style holster, it's absolutely stunning. I'm looking forward to the project, but it'll be a good while before time permits me to get on it.
