1st Generation Pocket Model
« on: September 05, 2019, 12:20:45 PM »
Just won this one on Gunbroker.  1865 manufactured 6 shot Pocket model that had a rear sight added at some point.  Will take more pictures when it arrives, along with the Navy and Pocket model won in July.

Fingers,

Very nice for a 1st Gen! Kudos!

I guess I cannot understand why I should buy a 150+ year-old gun at the average or higher prices that they command on the market, unless I collected that era of original guns. Maybe I am misled, but a new replica version to look similar to the original when new appeals to me more, and I can shoot them without fearing a monetary loss on a par with shooting an original.

I guess to each their own.

Regards,

Jim

That’s a beauty and I basically agree with everyone, even sourdough.  Six shot Pockets are a genre all their own.  Really nice, Fingers. I like that 3d mod Dragoon style sighting arrangement.  Congrats and a few more buys and you'll be number one American collector of the world.  Maybe you already are.

also,

If I had a genu-wine antique original I’d leave it out and around to handle and admire.  I’d value and appreciate it for just what it was.  I wouldn’t need to shoot it to do that, not so long as I had some well functioning handsome repros to shoot the livin snot out of and take camping, hiking, riding or just across the yard after a rattlesnake.  The antique would be considered to have earned a well-deserved repose and there’d be no worries about being that last guy to ever shoot it.

That's is affirmative.  I will probably use my 6 shot R&D conversion cylinder on both of them too.  Depends on them passing a tech inspection first.

When did Colt first produce 6 shot pocket models?
From what I have found so far they started making 6 shooters around 1860.  My pocket model reference library and data base is just getting started.

I've got a modern pocket model to compare with the 1st Gens.

.

That is music to my ears. I know there are those among us, that would relegate it safe queen status. I am not of that mind. It was meant to shoot, and shoot it should do. Even if only once in a great while. Glad to hear the old girl will still make smoke.

If they were in pristine NRA Fine condition with 90% bright blue and CCH finish, I would have second thoughts; but, since they are both well used, I think a little more wont hurt.

12 grains of fffg, lubed wad and a 0.323 round ball is in order for testing.

Nice catch Fingers !
I wasn't aware of the 6-shot Pockets, thought they were all 5-ers. Suppose the perimeter of that cylinder is pretty tightly packed with chambers ???
Yes, shoot it. 12 grains sounds just about the right amount.
Looking forward to your range report.

I'll get right on it.

Are you & Anne going to be able to visit sometime? I'll need some assistance in doing the report

Would love to, Fingers. Have to do some saving first. Long walk. Much dough.
