Savage 99

Savage 99 rifles are a favorite of mine. They go back a long way.
Most LGS employees and gun range shooters I’ve encountered  are clueless about them.   My two are modern rifles Even if they were designed 120 years ago one in.308 the other  .243. These are 50 year old cartridges on the shoulders of the 300 savage. But still as good as most currently marketed new cartridges. Like Mauser bolt action rifles. Lots of different actions but none better.  Both are 19th century designers.
I saw a great photo of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, one of the guys who ambushed Bonnie and Clyde, holding a 99.

In 1964 my brother and I were in Monterey HS Lubbock, tx. I was a time and chance to get a deer rifle. The 99 was one of the choices, but we got Remington 600 in 243. The 99 has always been on my mind. The 600s are long gone.  During one of the rushes on simiauto weapons rifles and handguns I made a trade. I saw this great 99f in 243 in a Lubbock pawn shop. There was lots of business for ARs and military style pistoles. I’m sure that 99 would remain untouched and un recognized  in 2012.  I had a Glock 40s&w I offered for trade. The manager of the arms section was rushing around to meet customer demands. He said in a hurry. “I’ll trade even.”  I got my 99. 
    The other is a 99c in .308 made in 1964. I got at a gun show in Abilene,tx he last couple of hours of the show from a dealer that needed a sale.  Fairly modest $500. Price.

Nice rifles. The Savage 99 is high up on the list of rifles I would like to own.

I don't own one, but I've always wanted one. I'd love to have a 99 in .308 caliber like yours. It would make a handy deer rifle.

Hey Guys,

The only complaint I ever had with my Model 99 in 300 Savage was the little indicator which sticks out the top of the frame when it was cocked, that would really tear up a jacket when carried on the shoulder.

They are a very smooth shooting rifle. You can also shoot pointed bullets safely. I reluctantly sold mine last year, still have the loading dies and brass.

I'm partial to them myself. Last year I hunted the deer woods with my grandfather's 1895(precursor to the 1899) Savage in .303 Savage. This year I took a 1899 SRC in .303 Savage. They're a solid and vastly underrated gun.

I have one in 300 Savage, but I no longer carry it.
The only bad thing I can say about the 99 is the cocking indicator,
it will tare up the shoulder of your hunting coat if carried over your shoulder.
I found out the hard way, but they are nice rifles.
