Ordered a new Uberti 1849 Pocket

Hi, I ordered a new Uberti 1849 Pocket revolver on sale from Dixie Gun Works, see:

Trying to get the right sized projectiles for this revolver has been difficult. Uberti specs a 0.33" ball, but nobody makes that sized ball. A tight fitting ball seems to be critical for reasonable velocities with this revolver. 00-buckshot is 0.33", but contains antimony as a hardener, not good for ease of loading. Cabelas currently has free shipping on any order, so I ordered a 00-buckshot mold to cast my own balls for the 1849, see:

Does anyone else here have this revolver, and what do you think of it?

Hi Tom, I was thinking exactly the same thing about a conversion cylinder. Is the 32 S&W short the same as what's called the 32 S&W, not the 32 S&W long? See:

Hi, Track of the Wolf has the right sized 0.33 ball, see:

5lbs should provide ~700 shots. I suspect that I will be bored with this pea-shooter long before I use them all up.

Anticipating a conversion cylinder is in the future for the 1849 I ordered brass and dies for .32 S&W. I still need to find the right bullet mold. Lee has a #90300 mold, but 93gr may be too heavy a bullet for the 1849?

I just looked up the 32 conversion cylinder on the Taylor's and Co web site, and it specifies the 32 S&W Short cartridge.  Hope this helps.  However, the 32 short and the 32 long are the same except for length (and of course pressure/velocity) so I assume (and we KNOW what that means    ) that the cylinder is only chambered for the shorter case.    Sounds like a neat idea, though.  I have a conversion cylinder for my 1858, and love it.

32 S&W is .300 shorter than a 32 S&W long .61 vs .91 approx.
I have a Iver Johnson break action in great condition that is chambered for 32 S&W.

Hi Steve, it appears that the .32 S&W calls for a 0.312-5" bullet that fits inside the case that has a larger OD of 0.334-5", see:

My reloading manuals for this cartridge has 1-1.5gr of Bullseye powder used. Unless very careful, this looks like a cartridge that is very easy to overload.

Hi Steve, no, I don't know the bore diameter of the Uberti 1849. What I do know is that there are 7 rifling grooves that makes slugging the bore and getting accurate readings a royal PITA.

Hi, I ordered 500 .32 78gr Laser Cast bullets for my soon to be ordered Taylor 1849 conversion cylinder, see:

The 250gr .452" Laser Cast work very well for my .45 Colt 1858 and 1860 conversion cylinders.

I also ordered a Lee #90300 mold that casts a 0.311" 93gr bullet. That bullet may be just a little too big for the .32 S&W conversion cylinder. Time will tell.

I expect to use Trail Boss as the propellent for the .32 S&W since it is the most practical bulkiest powder available for throwing such a light weight charge, 1-1.5gr.

Hi, my new Uberti 1849 .31 pocket revolver arrived today. My initial impression is mixed. The revolver is tiny, and the exterior fit and finish excellent. The exterior is beautiful. However, the lockworks is stiff and rough. The more I work the action, the smoother it becomes. Uberti specs the cylinder chamber at 0.319", but I measure chambers 0.321-0.322". The nipples are somewhat countersunk in the cylinder and none of my nipple wrenches fit inside the countersunk opening. Does anyone know of a source of nipple wrenches that will fit this Uberti 1849? I won't shoot this revolver until I first get the nipples out and reset them back in with minimal torque.

Today I cast many hundred pure lead 0.33" balls to use in this revolver.

they say to use "bc-clt" lube on the nipples. I have found that "Never seize" works much better and withstands temps you would not believe. My dad worked for a natural gas pipeline and they used never seize on their turbine bolts. Now those got hot, and were cranked down as the discharge pressure was 1050 psi into a 36 inch pipe!  That is good enough for me.
