Uberti Stainless Navy #37
« on: April 18, 2020, 12:36:29 PM »
As most of you know, I acquired a rare Uberti Navy in stainless steel, with the help of our very own Fingers McGee. Well today the pistol arrived!

My first impression of this gun is amazement. I don't think a finer Colt clone has ever been made. I'm here to tell you, fit and finish on this thing is nothing short of spectacular. No gaps. No transition from one part to the next. Even where the grip wood meets the frame is seamless. There's no step like on other guns. Uberti really paid attention when they built these. I don't know about the arbor length. I haven't got the far yet. I'm sure it's probably short like all the rest. But everything else is awesome.

Without further adieux, here's a few preliminary pictures.

Here's all the markings as requested by Fingers.

The gun has definitely been fired, but not a lot. Tomorrow I'll clean and oil it really good.

I have a question for Fingers. I put a magnet on the gun and it sticks good to the barrel and hammer. But it doesn't stick to any other part at all. Are your guns similarly magnetic?

Don't worry about it. It's gonna be a cased closet queen because it is worth far more than you paid for it, and you have lots of other revolvers to shoot! Keep it original. That is why my Pietta Dance .36 will remain with SB TG, even though not correct on an original gun, because that is how it came from the factory for collector purposes, and I won't shoot it. I also have lots of other guns for that purpose.

If I were you I would check on the fact that the barrel is marked Allen Firearms. If memory serves correctly, the owner of that concern bought out Replica Arms El Paso Texas, moved the operation to Santa Fe, and is now Cimarron and has no affiliation with Replica Arms Marietta Ohio. That might even make it more rare than a run-of-the-mill Uberti stainless 1851 Navy (if there is such a thing). Once you get it all somewhat sorted out about this revolver, you might start a thread on the Black Powder Revolver Collecting forum.

Great acquisition!

Jim

Thanks Fellas. I feel like I really scored on this one.

Jim, you are right on all accounts. I believe your timeline is exactly correct for this gun. And I'm way ahead of ya, I already posted it on the collector forum.

Fingers, I updated the first post with all the pictures of the markings. I don't think I missed any. Let me know if you need anything else for your database.

It does like mighty good in the display box.

Nothing like a cased revolver, IMO. It looks really good in its new home.

Unless my eyes deceive me, it looks like it has an 1860 Army gripframe with a brass backstrap? If so, that is another collector item to be assessed.

Thanks for posting it on the BP Collector forum.

I agree Jim. I love cased guns with all the accoutrements.

The grip is actually a Navy and the grip frame is all stainless like the rest of the gun.  It's probably just the perspective from the phone camera that's throwing it off.

Sure looks like an 1860 gripframe to me, but you have hands on.

The top pic kinda looks like it might be an army but in the second pic it's definitely a navy grip fame. I don't see any pics where the backstrap appears to be brass. There's three pics with the backstrap shown in the background and it's definitely not brass.

Wood and grip frame look straight-up Navy from here.

The presence of Nickel in the stainless alloy might cause that lack of magnetism.
Is it true that some series of stainlessÂ’ are just not magnetic?

I just checked my pair of 7 1/2 inch 1851s, an 1851 Navy Sheriffs model, and an 1862 Pocket Navy.  All four have magnetic barrels, hammers, wedges and screws.  Magnet will not stick to frames, backstrap, trigger guards or cylinders.

Thanks Fingers. That's exactly how mine are.

I gotta say, now that I own one of these guns, my appreciation for them has gone up immensely. I will definitely try to acquire more of them if they become available, and I'm able to afford them.

Did I mention I really like this gun?

As shown by this transaction, ya gotta keep your eyes peeled.  I missed this one because I stopped looking.  I've Been concentrating on first generation 6 shot 1849 Pocket models. I've picked up 4 so far and hopefully will pick up another tomorrow.

I know about 'Like this gun'.  I sold 6 of mine last year and I'm regretting it still.

I agree Fingers. You definitely have to keep your eyes open.

I do things like misspell the names of things that I'm looking for. You'd be surprised how many people can't spell. Back when I was building hot rods, I liked using period parts to build the cars. I would scour eBay and other sites looking for Guide headlights. I can't tell you how many I scored for cheap because people would spell Guide wrong. Giude and Gide were common. I'd get $500 sets of lights for under $100 sometimes.

So I do the same thing looking for guns.

Maybe I shouldn't have given away my secret........ f(*&
