So back in May I purchased a Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor 45-70 (Mfg Cartouche 1889) from an acquaintance in the USA and imported via Borderview Logistics. It arrived back in July, yes it took a while for the US gubermint to issue the export license, but it has been well worth the wait.
I've been working on black powder cartridge reloads and familiarizing myself with the gun, I have had it to the range twice so far. First range day was to a nearby club that has a 100 yd rifle bay - I shot a homemade target ( see attached pic) 25, 50, 75 and 100 yd increments - POI moved up ~6" with every 25 yards - research later said the battle sights are set to 265 yds which explains the rising point of impact.
Next range day which was last Saturday I went to another club that has a long range bay , out to a 1000 meters in 200 meter increments. I had (2) loads both with 405g Hollow base lead bullets (cast myself using the Lee Mold), one was 55g Goex 2fG (uncompressed) and the other was 70g Goex 2fG ( compressed using TOW compression die) topped with a cardstock wad. Primer's were Winchester LMRP. I set up a piece of 20" x 30" bristle board with a 10" black pie plate centered horiz. and vert. This time I used the Buffington leaf with the peephole aperture and set the adjustment to 265 , fired 3 rounds and made adjustments downward in increments of 10 finally settled at 215 which gave me 3 successive hits on the pie plate. Looking forward to moving out the distance , previous owner had shot competitions out to 600 yards with this gun.
