A "different" Vetterli
« on: October 22, 2020, 11:48:27 AM »
I bought a Vetterli 35+ years ago from a co-worker; I didn't even know what it was then. A while later, another friend got me into collecting them; he was a top shooter of cast bullets in the CBA and wrote several articles for the newsletter. I got this one on an auction site, mainly because it was unusual.

Vetterli rifles, some of them, have some very nice wood. This is probably my nicest stock.

I did not think that gold would have a patina, or is that just my old eyes?

Jim, I don't know if it is gold plated or just brass. I guess I should remove a part and test on a hidden portion.

Gold doesn't patina, it just loses it's shine. The only places I saw patina could have been the lighting.

It looks like gold plating to me. Very cool.

The Vetterli is a kind of inline right?

Dave, actually the Vetterli is a bolt action repeater. It uses 10.4 X 38R rimfire  ammo (. 41 Swiss). Many of these surplus rifles were imported, cut down, and offered as inexpensive hunting rifles in the early 1900s. Ammo was commercially available back then but hasn't been made for several decades. I have modified some bolts to center fire for myself and others. Brass making is a time consuming job, but satisfying. This is usually done using 348 Win. or 8mm Lebel brass.

That's pretty neat Em.

Which rifle am I thinking of? Isn't there a German made "muzzleloader" that has a bolt and inline ignition?
