Zulu conversion
« on: December 10, 2020, 03:07:22 PM »
ShotGunDave posted  pictures of a Zulu conversion on the Trapdoor thread. I will post pictures of mine here. I said it needed some minor parts, and I know I have a tin of some of those parts......somewhere.

Hole for the Holy Water blessing. At least that is what I have always heard it was prior to being shipped off to Africa.

Mine is stamped "Hunter" on the barrel, as were many others.

Well, hooray! I found the tin of parts. The parts were in the tin alright, but I didn't know where the tin was!

At the time I checked the tin, it wasn't marked. It is now!

This particular conversion was made by cutting off the breech of a French percussion musket and attaching the action/breechblock mechanism. Some muskets were rifled but I have not seen any, most were smoothbore. The British did a very similar conversion to the Enfield muskets; the Snider conversion in .577 caliber. You can find several videos on YouTube relating to these guns.

These guns were the only ones African natives were allowed to have. I think maybe they were imported back into the US as a cheap shotgun. Vetterli rifles were also imported as cheap hunting guns; Sears sold them for around $5-6.00 in the early 1900s.
