A ball this size was used for indoor shooting practice in the military. There were probably gang molds that they used as it would be tedious to cast hundreds with a single cavity mold.

For civilian use, those round balls could be loaded 1, 2, or 3 in a 45-70 case. They were not real accurate loads (except for the one ball loads) but were devastating at close range!
