This design was used in the later years of indoor target practice in the military. It weighs the same as the round ball, about 149 grains, but is more accurate.

Digging through a copy of Handloader magazine(Feb 2014, #288), there is an article "Old Timers and the 45 Colt" and it shows that original Ideal "collar button" bullet--so named because it resemble the collar buttons people used to wear on their shirts. According to the author, 3.0 grs of Bulleye gave 306 fps and acceptable accuracy(shooting rats in the barn) and 38grs 2F Goex gave him 843 fps with modest recoil. I have a similar bullet I cast from an Accurate Mold design and actually have a bunch of rounds made up with that same 38 gr 2F load and can concur that recoil isn't bad. I've used it a few times at Cowboy matches. Anyway, the author was pleased enough with the collar button bullet that he claimed it was one mold he wouldn't let get away.

I don't recall the magazine at the moment, but the author loaded some of these with 2fg or 3fg BP, 8-10 grains as the equivalent of what the old 45-70 s were shooting.
