Mortar shoot at rendezvous
« on: July 17, 2021, 10:15:33 AM »
Each year at our rendy near Tomahawk, Wi we hold a cannon/mortar shoot. Lots of fun. This is the candy cannon for the kids.

They are shooting at a target on a tripod in the middle of the field.

It took a few shots, but they came very close. I think one shot tipped the tripod over at this match. You may be able to see the tripod set-up if you enlarge the picture a bit. It is about halfway between the left shoulder of Jim and the edge of the picture.

What distance are we looking at here 200 yards maybe? What's the projectile, looks to be maybe  soda can size?
Looks like a lot of fun.

I don't recall exactly, but between 100 and 200 yards. And yes, probably soda cans filled with concrete. The range would close after everyone shot and then they would retrieve the shot for re-use.

Are you using about a pound per shot?

A pound sounds like a little much. They used to use a pound to launch anvils at the anvil shoots in Laurel MS. A pound ought to put a concrete filled Coke can into low orbit. (7+"

I'm only guessing here, but I'd say maybe 100-150 grains.

I've seen the anvil launchings on YT. And yes, they do use a full pound.

The national champion of the anvil shoots lived in Laurel. One year his buddies set up an aluminum anvil to fool him. It used to be on YouTube but I think it's gone now.
