Ramrod retention
« on: July 17, 2021, 12:08:25 PM »
I'm new to the flintlock world. So hopefully one of you fine gentlemen can help me.

The ramrod on my rifle has no tension on it at all. If I point it down, anywhere past horizontal, it slides right out. What can I do to fix it? Should there be anything down in the channel to hold it in place?

Thanks for the help fellas.

If memory serves me right my two GPR 'S  have a flat spring that put tension on the ramrod.

I think the spring is just forward of the stock.

Thanks Shootemup. I kinda thought that is what should be in there. Mine is a Traditions. I'll do a little digging and see if it should have one.

Thanks for the help Shootemup. I went to the Traditions website, and found the schematic for my rifle. Easily found the part I needed on it. So I sent them an email asking if they sell the parts. We'll see what they say.

The next question is have we seen this  rifle ? How does it spark? What kind of load are you shooting?  Okay that's three questions.

Those are all great questions! *6'

Yes, I did post the rifle, there's a thread all about it just below. It does seem to spark pretty good and I don't know about a load yet, as I've not been able to shoot it. Hoping to change that real soon!

Dave, I would think you could make a replacement spring. I have a spring fetish, save all sizes, shapes, manners of springs! *6' A small, old wind-up clock would probably give you a thin spring to fashion into a ramrod retainer.

I had an Investarms Hawken once upon a time and broke the ramrod. The replacement I got was too small so I just took a flat piece of metal and put it in the ramrod channel. It was a friction fit and worked pretty good.

Those are great ideas guys. I may just have to do that. I haven't heard back from Traditions.

I can look to see what I have laying around here, can send you a hunk if I find something suitable. I have the opposite problem with a couple of my rifles with the humidity here...swelling up and stuck in the stock.
