Size of lead to 'slug' a barrel?
« on: August 20, 2021, 09:39:44 AM »
I have an 1894 Winchester (mfg date 1897) chambered in 38-55 , the rifling is visible but the bore is quite dark - I would like to 'slug' the barrel. My question is would I be ok to use a .451 lead round ball to slug the barrel? Or do I need something smaller diameter? Looking for recommendations / suggestions.

Thanks, Retreever

.451 would work if you could get it started, but doubt that would be easy. I would start with a .380 round ball (nominal 38 is .357) and better yet if it was a conical with an ogive. Once it's past the crown it should go fairly easy.

This^^^^ You'd have to use a hammer to start a .451 ball.

not a hammer... lol... a Mallet.. hard plastic or hard rubber... i use a steel rod with bands of tape every inch to  keep it off the sides of the bore to get it the rest of the way...

Yeah, but if you do it too many times.....you may get a demerit. And you know what that means! If you do, explain it to me. I was just given a warning on CastBoolits a week or so ago. I had posted a for sale ad with 13 items in it. I was (politely) informed I could post for sale ads with 10 items in them 5 times a month. BUT... I couldn't post a single ad with 13 items in it. Okaaay, I had forgotten about that rule. First offense, so no points!
