It's that time again.

I prefer greased felt wads instead of using Crisco, or some other grease, smeared over the front of the chambers.
I have never suffered a chain fire in over forty-five years of shooting black powder revolvers using homemade wads.

Thanks Old Frenchy. 😊 me being a newbie to BP that is encouraging to hear. I too like the lubed felt wad method. I am just beginning to make my own. I know there are many recipes out there as to what lube to use. I would welcome your thoughts on this subject. Thanks Tim

I'm also a big fan of the greased wad, OF. Nothing worse than trying to hold on to a a greased pistol. I'll take care of moving the thread for you.

There are as many lube recipes as guys shooting it seems. The more sophisticated ones use mutton tallow, lanolin, etc.  For my use, any animal tallow and beeswax seems to work well. I have used deer, beef, and lately, bear. A close neighbor has been successful in getting bear licenses and I asked if he would save me bear fat the next time he got one. He gave me almost 25 pounds, which is stored in my freezer. An even simpler recipe is beeswax and olive oil.  :reading:

Em. Thank you sir. The most readily available for me would be olive oil😊👍 what would be the mix/ratio for good consistency? 1 to 2 for example? Thank you, Tim

I'm in agreement with all you guys.
I've used both methods and much prefer the lubed wads.

Olive oil has been used for centuries. They used to call it sweet oil back in the day. Tim 50/50 is a good mix or you could just use olive oil by itself.

I've done this...it works. Just be aware that if you intend to load and not shoot off your loads the olive oil can contaminate your powder after several hours. For range use it works very well.

Hawg. Thank you man. Olive oil alone on the wad is okay then? That sounds very simple👍

You have to let it dry first.
