How much of a masochist are you?
If a lot, start with a flintlock longrifle kit.
That will teach you a thing or two...
If not, probably best to start with a caplock .50 cal rifle. Plenty of decent ones out there very reasonably priced. I'd recommend half-stock Hawken style as a good beginner rifle. Even the kits are easy to build if you're so inclined, most needing very little finish work to the wood and brass and a lot come with pre-blued hardware.
