ASM with conversion ?
« on: December 17, 2021, 08:24:47 AM »
I was looking at a ASM 1851 Navy yesterday and was wondering can one of the Howell drop in conversion cylinders for either the Pietta or Uberti be made to work with it?

Shootemup, contact Walt Kirst at Kirst Konverters. He can tell you if one or the other will work in an ASM.

He is really helpful and has a service to fit the conversion cylinders if you want him to. It's not expensive either.

If you want to go with the Howell's Old West style drop-in conversion, Mike Brackett at Goon's Gun Works can certainly do it for you. He fit the one for my Walker perfectly and tuned the gun to match at the same time. The Walker is an ASM.

Does anyone know  the  length  difference  between  the Howell  Pietta and Uberti  drop in cylinders for the  51 navy? I'll  call Howell and 45 Dragoon  when I get a chance but just thought someone might know.

I know that when Sourdough Jim was around, he put an Uberti cylinder in an ASM 1860 Army. It fit perfectly and functioned well. Don't know if that helps or not.

I know the Pietta cylinder is too long for an ASM.

The Kirst Pietta cylinder is longer than the Uberti one. It can be made to fit by carefully shortening it, provided that's the only difference for an ASM. Perhaps the Uberti one would be the right length and not need shortening.

Me too Mark. I miss them dearly. But a small amount of digging, brings their knowledge back into view. Page 3 of this thread has Jim's report on fitting an Uberti cylinder to his ASM gun.

Thanks everyone  I measured the  ASM cap cylinder  and my Howell  Pietta cartridge  cylinder  the Howell  is about 40 thousands  longer  so the  Uberti  sounds like the one I need.

That sounds great. Look forward to hearing how it works out.

Hello shootemup,

I think the Pietta has a larger arbor then the ASM.
I don't have any .36 caliber Pietta's or dimensions,
but I know my ASM cylinder will not fit over the arbor
on my Pietta .44 calibers.
