38 Long Colt
« on: December 31, 2021, 04:37:20 AM »
Hey Guys,

Mike Beliveau has a new video out on reloading the 38 Long Colt.
He does it both with Hollow Base & Heeled Base.
Lots of good information & done in a straight forward method.

ASM Thank you Sir. Fantastic video.  :-*  This guy is very easy to watch and keeps my attention. Very intuitive video. I've never reloaded cartridges. This makes me want to experiment and where I was once thinking re-loading could be a real pain, that is no longer the case. I thought it interesting that he reloads with 3F versus smokeless. I would like to look at more of this guys videos.  Thanks

Using the Old West Bullet Molds crimp die on the heel bullets couldn't be easier. I finally went to that after casting my own hollow base bullets(worked real good but slow to cast a single cavity). Then I tried the commercially available Hornady and Speer hollow base bullets. They are coated with some type of waxy substance that combined with the blackpowder fouling made the absolute WORST mess I ever saw. After 50 rounds the bullets started to keyhole and later when trying to clean the barrel I got the cleaning rod stuck in it. This happened on several occasions even after trying to clean that waxy substance off the bullets before loading them.
So now I usually just load the heel base bullets in my Uberti/Kirst 51 Navies without issue.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

The commercial bullets were probably lubed with smokeless lube.

Well, so much for a single cavity hollow base mold being too slow to cast. I just ordered a four cavity hollow base wadcutter mold from MP Molds. I have to cast outdoors so I will have to wait a bit to try it out. My experience with a hollow base bullet(Rapine Molds) in a Uberti 51 NavyKirst with unlined barrel was very good. That bullet had a small rounded nose so I'm hoping the wadcutter profile will shoot as good with my black powder loads. Should be OK at Cowboy Match distances.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.
