Set Screw in ASM Dragoon
« on: February 08, 2022, 10:41:41 AM »
Okay....Mike!!??? When you have a minute. My recently purchased Replica Arms (Marietta) ASM has a set screw instead of a pin for the arbor key?? or whatever you call it. Not sure I worded that right but anyway. I've been told that it is "rear end" ugly. The arbor has a miniscule amount of slop. Do you think someone operated on this before because of the set screw that's in there or was this set screw most likely from the manufacturer? The gun looks like its never been fired or very little. I know, I know...it needs work. If you have time, please ....Sir??

I saw an 1851 navy kit gun that had a screw like that. I know it was factory because the gun had never been built.

Hawg, I appreciate your response thank you. It doesn't really look like a botched job to me. It's funny. My first Uberti brand new Walker does nt even show a pin ore screw IIRC. I will take a picture of that one as well.

The pins are sometimes hard to see. Many times they will finish-grind the hammer channel AFTER the roll pin is install, by the looks of it.

Thank you Cap..is it possible that they actually cover over the pin? I swear it seems i could not see one on that Walker. I will check tonight though.

If the pin is solid, you likely wouldn't see it, Tim.

I've never had one where you could actually see the pin.

Hawg, thanks. Question, how do they disguise the pin so that you would be unable to see it? They put solder or spot weld and polish to cover?

Zulch, it's probably a factory screw.  It'll need to come out so you can unscrew the arbor so you can tighten it up. If it were a "modern" fix it'd probably be an Allen set screw. Personally, I like pins you can drill out. Hardened set screws seem like a good idea till somebody messes up the Allen wrench fit!

 - Since it's already there, go ahead and use it (unless you can't get it out!).
- Remove the arbor
- Upset the shoulder in 3 or 4 places (doesn't take much)
-Really torque it back in place
- install barrel and wedge
- then install set screw with maybe some blue locktite. (None on the arbor)

Mike, thank you sir very much for the reply and instruction. I see your point about messing up an allen screw head or even the standard screw head for that matter. Makes perfect sense. I will attempt to get the current set screw out and report back my success or lack thereof. I really appreciate tou taking time to answer my question. Thank you, Tim
