I know, it ain't black powder
« on: February 21, 2022, 01:21:46 PM »
When we went shooting last week, I took the M1 Garand along. I bought this rifle for my Dad around 25 years ago for Xmas. He was in the Marines and fought in Korea. Every time my brothers and I talked about guns, he'd always get nostalgic about shooting his beloved M1 Garand, and how it was the greatest rifle ever made. At the time, I had an FFL. So my brothers and I decided to find him one and get it for him. The gun is technically his, but will come back into my possession once he's no longer with us. He's 90 now and doesn't really shoot anymore. It's been under the bed for 10 years or so, and I decided it needed a little exercise. We had fun putting some rounds downrange with it.

Looks like a blast! The history of that rifle speaks for itself.

Thanks fellas.

You're right Mick, mucho history in this rifle. The receiver and most all parts are Springfield manufactured. The serial puts it as a 1944 made gun. So it most likely saw some action. It doesn't have an import stamp on it either. I'm sure it was arsenal refurbed in it's life, because it's wearing a hardwood stock instead of walnut. One of these days I'd like to find a proper piece of wood for it. But I'd bet that a proper stock would cost as much or more than I paid for the rifle.

Dave, try CMP for a stock.  They've contracted with one of the stockmakers for new ones.
I bought a 2nd M1 last year from the CMP.  It has brand new walnut stock and Criterion barrel.  Rifle only cost $650 so they must be getting stocks at a fair price.

Hi Shotgun, do you reload for the Garand or buy factory ammo?  Good vid.  Your girl did real well.  M1 is famous for a kick.

I don't reload for it yet G. I hardly ever shoot it. But my Dad has several ammo cans full of mil-surp ammo for it. Probably at least 1000 rounds, already loaded in the enbloc clips.

If you do decide to reload for it the only real quirk is you need to use the right speed of powder, ~IMR4895.  Most commercial .30-06 ammo has too slow of powder, resulting in too high of pressure at the gas port.  Mine have seen a bit of AA2495 and BL-C(2).

I figured as much Dave. I've shot modern ammo through it before, and it was a bit finicky.

Capt, that's exactly why I only brought a couple clips of ammo with me. This thing will burn through ammo before you know it!
