Pocket/Muff gun
« on: October 31, 2022, 07:32:43 PM »
Picked this up at my favorite LGS today. it is .31 caliber, no markings, in rough shape. I have two different opinions on it from shops that have sold one. One thinks it is late -1830's, patterned after an Ethan Allen. The other thinks it is circa 1850, and likely Belgian. In either case they sold for considerably more than the $20 I paid for it.

It's an Allen & Thurber.

I don't know. I see similarities. But also differences.

One of the reasons I go to this shop is they get in some black powder stuff on trade, but have zero interest in it, and sell it cheap. This is the same place I got my 3rd model Dragoon for like $130.

Took the tape off the grip. One of the grip panels is cracked in half. I can repair it easily.

That's a fine purchase, EM. Even if it's an 18XX copy of an Ethan Allen or Allen & Thurber, it's certainly a great buy at $20.

Close, but not the same.

Grips are a different length and slightly different shape. Proportion of round to octagonal on barrel is different. Hammer shape is different. There are no sights or provision for sights on mine. There are no markings on the barrel at all, though there is a serial number (824) in front of the trigger guard. The detailing where the round and octagon of the barrel meet is missing on mine, as is the detail where the barrel meets the receiver. What looks like a screw on the front of the A&T gun is not on my gun. Also the grip screw on mine is a simple wood screw that goes through the opposite grip and was cut short. There is no escutcheon that the screw screws into.

In short, the A&T is a much higher quality pistol than the one I have here. Although it could have served as inspiration for my gun.
