Never get behind a horse without letting him know where you're going. Put your hands on him as you're going back. Never approach one directly from behind.

Interesting story about General,  Rick. I know very little about horses. Thanks for the education Rick and Hawg thank you for the proper way to approach one.

I recalled that event as 50 years ago, but it was more like 30 years. General was used in the Legend of the Lone Ranger movie of 1981.  Of course filmed near Abiquiu probably a few years before it was released ?

A horse has both monocular and binocular vision. When something is going on in front of a horse both of his eyes are focused on it. He doesn't see what's behind him. If he's focused on what's in front of him or he's tied so he can't see what's behind him and you walk up behind him without letting him know you're there and you touch him or make some kind of sudden noise you're liable to get kicked. Horses are skittish and their survival instincts are very strong. A horses kick is his only defensive weapon and he's not afraid to use it.

I'm with you Sooty. I've never had a good experience either. But I've had a couple bad ones. I'm not too keen on my mode of transportation having a mind of it's own.

I'm guessing y'all weren't around horses much. Deal with horses and you're going to have a few bad experiences but the more you know about them the fewer of those experiences there will be. Horses can be as loyal as a dog and as mischievous as a four year old child. And don't tell me a horse can't or wont sneak up on you or laugh at you when he pulls one over on you.
