Elmer J. McCurdy aka Charles Smith

Alright fellers. It has been awhile so I'll "dig up"...... yet another dead guy and see if it sparks any interest. The extent of my knowledge on this outlaw is what I have gleaned from the glorious internet. I've never read any books on the feller. Maybe some of you could tell me a little more about him. This guy led an interesting life and an even more interesting life, after death. Allegedly, he was active in the carnival.....after he was killed.  :icon_scratch: His show business career lasted 50 years they say. Apparently his life of crime was not so successful due to the fact that he wasn't so bright a character. Purportedly, he was not so skilled in the use of nitro glycerin either but did know just enough to get him into trouble. Ill fated attempts to blast safes open ended in disaster often. He managed to destroy any monetary gain within any safe in his path. I realize now that he was certainly no gunslinger of renown but he was shooting at the Sheriff and the small posse just before he was struck with a bullet from a 7.65mm Luger automatic pistol. I wonder what gun he was using to fire at the posse? I can't find a darn thing about his gun?  Oh, and he did some time in the Army as a machine gun operator. Maybe one of those water cooled jobs? Okay, okay.... so he's no Billy the Kid or King Tut or even the 6 million Dollar Man, I'll grant you that, but he does have an interesting story and history.     L@J

thank you Sooty. I wish I could've found what gun he was using at the shootout but his afterlife seems to be the most focused on thing. Poor ol' guy. He was a mess.

That was a great read Hawg. thank you. Man that poor fella couldn't win for losing. Example:  Quote: "They left the train with under $50 in cash, some whiskey, a gun, and the conductor’s watch. The haul was called “one of the smallest in the history of train robbery”. A disappointed McCurdy ran off and hid in a hay shed where he polished off the stolen whiskey. Three days later he was dead after the hour long shootout with sheriffs Bob and Stringer Fenton and Dick Wallace." end quote. His story is like Horror in the Wax Museum. Almost unbelievable.
