I still have my dads old 12ga double sxs that a couple folks have told me I should start using lite loads in. Do you guys thank bp would be a good way to bring that pressure down from smokeless powder loads? Oh  ShotgunDave that is one cool fire breathing pic you put up there. Even with just wadding you could sit the bad guys butt on fire.

BP loads would be one way to keep pressures down.  There is also factory tested low pressure smokeless loads.  Hodgdon published some of them a few years back in one their annuals.  IIRC, some were down around 6,000 psi.  Likely won't cycle a semi auto, but perfect for being kind to an older double.

When I was a kid, I bought an old Parker 12 Ga SxS with Damascus barrels. It was beautifully engraved with beautiful scrolled hammers. I was advised at that time to shoot only light loads in it because BP being corrosive could have eaten between the layers of bonded steel and you'd never be able to tell until it blew up. If I had that shotgun today, I'd keep it as a collectible and never fire it with any loads at all. If yours has Damascus barrels, maybe you might want to set it aside as an heirloom and enjoy that aspect of it. If it has modern barrels, then low pressure loads like Dave mentioned might be a good idea. If it's at all questionable, it might be best to just keep it unused and play it safe.

Thanks Dellbert. I always try to "catch the fire" when the kids and I go shooting. They always make great pictures.

I've got an 1850ish Belgian made SXS 12 gauge with a fancy carved stock. I've got a Belgian made SXS Lancaster 12 gauge. I shoot both of them.

Well, it's not a new gun but it is modern and it has fluid steel barrels. My Dad's old Stevens SxS. The kids and I just took it out a couple weeks ago. Here I am shooting brass hulls loaded with 70gn of FFg. Works just fine.

way to go! what a beautiful shot caught at the moment of firing!
