Schofield 2nd time around
« on: October 26, 2023, 07:29:28 PM »
I had the Schofield with me last week at the range but had a problem with the hammer block safety mechanism so I never fired a shot with it.
I solved that problem so I took it out today to test it out.
Last time I fired it I used BP cartridges even though I knew the BP would prevent the gun from running for long.    It only lasted 9 or 10 shots before the cylinder was too stiff to turn.
This time I had cartridges loaded with 30 grains of American Pioneer powder.    It went much better.   42 shots before the cylinder started to drag.   I finished up a box of 50 cartridges.   The gun is a pleasure to shoot and hits POA unlike most other Italian replicas.

That's a beautiful Schofield, Mike. Those are loads of fun to shoot. The Schofield loads are a great load, too.

Hello Mike,

Just curious, was your powder charge measured with a scale of a bulk measurment?

Nice looking Pistola!

Hi ASM,   I measured out 30 grains on my digital scale for the first 10 cases.   Then I got tired of that and made a powder measure to use just for this load.  So both I suppose,  but mostly I used this dipper.

That's a mighty nice dipper. Much like how I make mine except I haven't used tubing for the handle. The end of the handle is scoop shaped on yours. Does that have a purpose for reloading? Maybe to add or remove a small amount on the scale?

Tim,   I just have the one Schofield cartridge revolver.   I also have the CO2 powered pellet gun.

Marshal...  Thanks, I have made several of these dippers.   I like to be able to grab what I need without having to do any set-up.  I make the scoop end to use like a powder trickler as it's hard to add a few grains with the dipper end.

That's a great idea. I will need to remember that when I make any in the future.

That’s a good looking firing piece.  Very handsome.
Does it have a 7” barrel?

I have never used American Pioneer powder.  How does it compare to    the other types of BP and subs?

Yep G Dog,  it has a 7 inch barrel.
AP powder is similar Black MZ which is no longer made.   I'd have to say it is more like 3F Goex than Triple 7 is.   Not real energetic but works very well.   I've heard shelf life is limited but I've had this pound for over 5 years and it's seems just like when I bought it.
