You could leave the lock as is, or polish it bright, or polish it then put some Birchwood brass black on it and finish it off with fine steel wool to bring out the highlights and give it that "Oldetimey" look.

My biggest concern is that when I pass away, my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

I'm going to brown it either way. I've got plenty of time to think it over before I get that far.

I ordered a plain maple stock. I wet it down some to see the figure better. It's definitely not plain.

I think the appearance of the lock looks really cool, just the way it is.
A very pleasing finish.

I have made some progress with it. I've got the nose cap and butt plate mated to the stock and got the ramrod slimmed down so it fits the hole in the stock. I even got the tip put on and pinned. I used a bigger nail to pin it than the one that came with it. I couldn't find a drill bit that would work with it. The pics make it look worse than it is. you can run your fingers across the joints and you won't be able to feel where wood meets metal. There are a few spots where you can barely feel it with your thumbnail on the butt plate but I'm calling it good. The next project is filing the tang down. I haven't polished any of the metal yet. I've got the whole stock sanded down with 120 and 220 grit. I've been over it twice with 220 but I keep finding tool marks. I'm sanding those spots as I find them. Once I get them all out to my satisfaction I'll go over the whole stock with 320.

As you can see the tang is going to take a good bit of filing.

If there's anything you see that you think needs more work say so.

That's looking good Hawg. The tang as you mentioned does sit high? Correct me if I am wrong, shouldn't the tang be countersunk? If so, does that mean you will need to file the tang rounding the edges to blend in with the stock? Also, I guess you are using a magnifying glass to search for tooling marks? It's going to be nice when you get her finished, I have no doubt.

By the way. I read this elsewhere.  "provide .010 clearance behind the tang and also provide a lot of draft to the rear vertical surface of the tang." Is this true or should I say good advice? Just curious.

The tang does sit high. I don't think the inlet is deep enough but I'll measure and see. I'm not qualified to operate chisels and gouges so deepening the inlet is out of the question. Everything else that's inlet is spot on. I really don't think there's any need to have any clearance behind the tang since the breech fits snug against the stock.
