The Quick and the Dead
« on: February 04, 2024, 05:40:23 PM »
This is the 1987 Sam Elliott version of the Louis L'Amour novel, featuring Sam as Con  Vallian (not the later Sam Raimi flick with the same name, with Sharon Stone) and Elliott plays the part of the half breed Con very well. It features a few very nice and recognizable firearms, such as the ubiquitous Colt 'Peacemaker' '73, Winchester '66, Winchester '73 and even a few Henrys...including what appeared to be an iron-frame version. Some of the other actors/actresses don't fit the genre much (the main heroine seems more like Barbie Goes To The Black Hills) but the flick was worth watching simply because I like Elliott as an actor and he plays the part well. I wouldn't pay $3.99 to rent it, but if you find it free, it's not a bad way to spend a couple hours with your boots up (mind them spurs!) and knocking back a brew or two.

Hi, my name is Sam Elliott.  I’m not really an actor, but I play one on TV

I've seen the version with Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman (what a damn good actor this one is! I love him as Little Bill in Unforgiven) and did not think much of it. I did not know there was previous one. I'll have to check on it.
Thanks for the tip Captain!  :toast:

I saw that version twice a couple years ago as it was playing on one of the Western channels. Haven't seen it listed lately. Not a bad movie, typical good Sam Elliot performance that I would watch again.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

Ringo, the plotline between the two seemed very different IIRC. (It's been a long time since the Hackman version). This version was pretty true to the L'Amour novel.

Another old western that I enjoyed is "Jane Got A Gun" with Natalie Portman. I admit the title leaves a lot to be desired....but the movie is worth watching, especially if you favor Walkers.....

Sam Elliot is great in westerns. Another one that had the potential to be great was Bruce Dern but he got too much hate for shooting John Wayne in The Cowboys. I never understood that. It was a movie for cryin out loud. You'd think he shot him in real life.

He played the villain well...a little to well, if you ask me! I recall a number of westerns he played in where his character pissed me off. (7+"
