That is really nice Hawg! It looks authentic. I've seen handmade knives similar to that one going for hundreds of dollars.

The only difference between Mike's Remington tin and the one I have is that mine says "Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co."

Nice! I have a Remington cap tin like that one and I dimly recall using a CCI tin like yours in the early '70s, but I too have never seen a Fiocchi tin like that.

I think it looks great Hawg, nice job! Here are a couple on mine, 110 grain measure on top and 70 grain below. Obtained them from Cabin Creek Muzzleloading years ago.

Mike, check out Clay Smith's website. He is a master gun builder who served an apprenticeship at the gun shop in Williamsburg, VA. He has a lot of high quality flintlocks on consignment from other makers besides his own builds. It's where I bought my last flintlock.

Flintlock Muskets and Rifles / Re: pan polishing

There is just something about flintlocks that really appeals to me, the primitive flash in the pan to ignite the main charge, but with the very sophisticated mechanical design of the lock itself using a "rock" (flint) to ignite it.

Might try that with my Great Plains. If I ever shoot it, that is.

I'd like to see a photo of that gun Capt'n.

I might try polishing the pans on my flintlocks after reading what Hawg did. Flintlocks are a lot of fun Zulch, easy to load and you don't have to worry about finding caps to shoot them.

Leather / Re: AW Brill holster

The tooling on that holster is fantastic. I used to tool leather years ago, even made my own tools, and never got anything to look that good.

Hawg, something worth trying, after loading your rifle use a pick or paper clip in the touch hole to loosen some of the powder in the breech before priming the pan.

Comparison using different grades of black powder in the pan:

No negative response here, you did a lot better than I did when I first shot my flintlock when it was new. I'm with you, I can't stand shooting paper either, cans, melons, or milk jugs full of water for me.

General Discussion / Re: Pan Primer
« on: March 17, 2024, 05:17:38 PM »
Priming from the horn is authentic 18th Century style. They usually primed with the same 3F or 4F that they loaded down the barrel, but admittedly 4F works best. One pound of 4F black priming powder can last for almost 3,000 shots.

That should work pretty good Hawg.

I use one like this, spring loaded tip, just push down with the tip to fill the pan with powder, available from Traditions, Cabela's, etc.
