Hi, a replacement rear sight was ordered and received from VTI for this revolver. The base of the rear sight will be ground down to allow the greatest range of rear sight elevation adjustment.

I also noticed that the painted front sight shows paint removal from the top of the front sight due to the sight being against the zipper of the muff. Black epoxy spray paint was ordered to provide a more durable finish for the front sight.

Just another example of a anal retentive perfectionist as it relates to my firearms.

Regards,
Richard

Hi, as most of you that know me, I'm a f...ing perfectionist when it comes to my firearms. I couldn't stand the difference in color and too long length of the brass front sight extension to my Pietta 1858 Target revolver. The front sight was shortened to the correct length and spray painted flat black. This is the revolver with the higher sight installed:

BTW, that yellow line under the sight is uncured Loctite that was removed after the photo.

Being a perfectionist doesn't allow me control the weather, it's snowing outside. It may take a few months before I can do the final sighting in.

Regards,
Richard

Hi since the weather is holding, I finally after a number of months got to sight in the Pietta 1858 Target revolver that has the taller front sight. The rear sight was raised to bring the poi-poa for 250gr .45 Colt conversion cylinder. This shows me that the front sight can be lowered by the amount of the rear sight raised (~0.1") to have poi=poa with the heavy .45 Colt bullet to be right on. That will then also give me sufficient rear sight adjustment when shooting C&B with this revolver. The revolver was grouping 2.5-3" @25yds. I'm now happy with the 1858 Target revolver.

I still have two .44 Pietta 1851 with tall sights to sight in with .45 Colt conversion cylinders. Col. Townsend Whelen once said “Only accurate rifles are interesting”. IMO that also goes for handguns. Handguns are most accurate when the poi=poa.

Regards,
Richard

Hi, the front sight of the Pietta Target 1858 was filed down to bring the rear sight down where the rear sight can now be adjusted for C&B poi=poa. The revolver sighted in with .45 Colt @25yds to have poi=poa. One two hand hold 6-shot group was 1.5"! This Target 1858 is now a tack driver with .45 Colt conversion cylinder. See the revolver with front sight painted with appliance black paint:
