Gettysburg
« on: July 03, 2015, 10:33:19 PM »
Well, today being July 3rd....as has been my tradition the last few years, I spend the 4th weekend watching Gettysburg in remembrance of those brave souls on both sides who fought and died this week so many years ago. No matter which side you're pullin' for, they gave it all.
We've been talking Sam Elliott a lot lately. His portrayal of General Buford is one of the highlights of his career, and the movie. Nevermind all the bad whiskers; this movie is one to buy and own.
Of course, I no longer watch it in one sitting; the DVD is broken into two halves, the second half which picks up after Little Round Top, so it makes for a couple two hour evenings rather than a four hour marathon!
I will freely confess to watching this movie before with an unloaded BP revolver in hand. It's really hard not to. Plenty of Colt cameos in this one, with Jeff Daniels sporting a '60 Army and his brother C. Thomas Howell putting a '51 Navy to good use.
From what I've heard, the soldiers were all re-enactors who provided their own uniforms, accoutrements, and weapons and marched in their own regiments....either for free or very little reimbursement. Otherwise, there was no way they could have paid extras; the costs would have been staggering. As it was, these guys didn't even require training; they just went out and 'did their thing', and did it damn well!
If you've never seen this one, send the wife and kids out to dinner and a movie, pour a cold one, and grab your unloaded BP revolver and relive the bloodiest four days on American soil.

Hemingway wrote in a letter once that at the Battle of Gettysburg God was on both sides.  Just sayin’.

Hi, two years ago my brother and I with our wives stayed a week at Gettysburg in General Lee's headquarters. It was the 150th anniversary of the battle at Gettysburg. The guided tours and displays were so interesting and moving. We even met Lieutenant Colonel Allen West who was doing a photo opt. If you have never been to Gettysburg you need to put it on your bucket list.

I agree that the movie Gettysburg with Jeff Daniels is one of the best. Daniels would have been the last on my list to do the lead role, but he carried it off brilliantly. I think my favorite 4th movie is the musical 1776, my second is The Patriot.

A happy and safe 4th of July to all here.

Regards,
Richard

Daniels really surprised me as well. All of the actors did a commendable job, some of the highlights were Martin Sheen as Robt. E. Lee, Tom Berenger as James Longstreet, Stephen Lang as Geo. Pickett, among many additional fine performances.
The facial hair was rather phony and over the top on more than one actor, but look past that.
The Armistead/Hancock thing was melodramatic and way overdone, but I s'pose that was so the girlfriends and wives that got dragged along to this movie wouldn't walk out...
The artillery barrage prefacing Pickett's Charge was rumored to be the largest heard on American soil since the Civil War. It could be heard over 30 miles away and many reported earthquake-like tremors nearby.
I USED to watch The Patriot before my copy disappeared, but I find Gettysburg more appealing, especially since it happened RIGHT NOW, 152 years ago (Fourth of July).

Anyone read The Killer Angels by Michael Sharra ?  That’s what this film Gettysburg is based on.  It got a Pulitzer just like McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove

The upper class types then were really melodramatic sometimes.  They read to much Ivanhoe and Waverly Walt Scott stuff.

Hi, Jeff Daniels also did a good job as George Washington in The Crossing.

You're correct, Richard. Saw it on TV...it was very good and Daniels was quite impressive. That came out shortly after 'Dumb and Dumber' and I watched it fearing it would be a total bomb. I was very impressed with his talent and ability to carry the part most convincingly!
