Griswold & Gunnison by Pietta
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:35:13 AM »
I have read the thread started started  Feb 2014, but wanted to ask a separate question as the gun is intriguing to me.
What I would like to know is how faithful Pietta copies are to the original ?
Is the $200 or so worth it ?

I can't answer the part about being true to originals. Dr. Davis might be able to.
You could post the question over on the Collector's Forum:

If you are not a member I can fix that in a hurry (yep; admin there, too)

Not a lot of traffic but the guys know their stuff.
As for the cost, well...it's a Colt brasser. With a Dragoon-style barrel. If you have a Colt brasser you could buy a barrel and make one. Or if you don't you could get a hunnert-dolla-brasser off one the auction sites. IMHO 2 bills is too much for any brasser, new or otherwise.
Personally, I love what Brazos Dave did with his.

I'd be reluctant to do that to a new Pietta, but some old' thang I won off Gun Broker? No problem. In a heartbeat.

I believe the current G&G offered by Pietta is an 1851 frame and grip (.36 cal.) with a blank cylinder and the dragoon style barrel instead of the octagon barrel.   The grip is definitely not correct.    I think the older CVA G&G models are closer to original than the new Piettas.    I'm just going on my observations.    The Capt. is right,   Dr. Davis or others on the collectors forum will be able to fill you in better.
