Very good work Bruce.  You took this guy out.  Like most fraudsters this one was only too willing to admit his “mistake” and express surprise and characterize himself as the ‘victim’ of (in this case) his local antique shop.  Then they move on to their next pidgin.

2rattlesnakes is a PAB (punk assed bitch) and you did him a job.  Good work!

i sent him an email last night and this is his response:

Thanks for your help,  Almost all of my firearms come from firearm auctions through local, and proxybid, and other sites.  I stumbled on this one at a small antique store where I was given the history of this piece. I wondered why there were punch marks. I ended the auction and I will keep this as my $500 mistake.

That's even funnier with more red flags. This is from the sellers description:

Quote
This piece came from an estate in Western Arizona.

That antique dealer must have conjured up a real good story when the rube started to look at it. It would have been nice if that store was named.

Unless the story and apology is also a con.

I think we can bet on it.  A con is gona con and this one can't even keep his story straight, which is standard for that type.

First, Ol Sourdough and then Bruce, really did count coup on mr. snake.  Very satisfying!  Good work, men.

I'm sure the Pietta markings were very thoroughly removed

It's not a Pietta unless it was made in the last two years. Prolly ASM. The buy it now price was 795.00. :o

I agree with Hawg. The grip profile is wrong even for the post-2014 Pietta Navies. Too thin at the wrist. Older Piettas had the infamous "tail" grip profile. Good eyes, sir:

Did ASM make repro 1951 "Navy" brasser .44 pistols with short barrel/load lever?

This is the link to the "May 1843" seller's Remington Revolving Rifle:

 http://www.gunbroker.com/item/685687460

I see a 24" Uberti with brass trigger guard and semi-curved buttplate.

Compare:

G Dog, get on it!

Pretty sure they did. Pietta and ASM were the main ones making 44 navy brassers. Euroarms may have but I don't think they made them with short barrels. Uberti made some in the beginning but again I don't think they made short barrels. I could be wrong on all counts tho.

Thanks for the info, Hawg. You are one of my go-to guys insofar as "ancient" history.

I went through all of the listings on GB this afternoon and could not find one. That does not mean they don't exist, though. I am sure that, sooner or later, someone will come up with one here.

Bruce,

If you can contact him via email, invite him to visit the different forums (links) and, if he is an honest rube, he may become an informed member. We may have him all wrong.

Been there, done that.

Thanks for posting that link. http://www.remingtonsociety.org/a-study-of-remington-revolving-rifles/ If you scroll down to page 32 there is a picture of Remington Revolving Rifle serial number 34, which is a .45 Colt centerfire caliber. That's really cool. As far as I know this is the only rifle of the period in .45 Colt.

Not sure about Euroarms; but Uberti did make some 36 cal brass framed Sheriffs models prior to 1980 (? -  maybe later too).

Gentlemen;
I "assumed" Pietta because Pietta is the only maker I know that made a 'shortie' brasser .44 Navy. Of course, I could very well be wrong, as Navy Arms may well have made one, with probably a whole lot less writing to defarb. Either way, this one got stopped in it's tracks.

Navy Arms didn't make jack, they're an importer(you should know that :D). They've sold Uberti, ASM, Palmetto and Pietta.
