Bell Bottom Blues

I suppose it's not worth the time I have spent pondering on it, but can't help but wonder as to what possessed Pietta to add the 'bell-bottom' flare to the grips on their 1851 Navy replicas (and possibly others?)
OK; it looks 'cool' at first glance, but on careful consideration is neither conducive to good shooting nor original. In fact, Mike Belleveau (aka Duelist1954) did a video on how to REMOVE the darn thing:

Here is a photo of my Pietta Sheriff grip: Note the Bell Bottom grip:

And here is the grip of my COM/EXCAM repro with a more 'historically-correct grip:

So...does anyone have any 'insider-info' as to what possessed Pietta to create an obvious design flaw?

My 60s are the same way, I don't dislike it, it fits my hand well.

having never really had the opportunity to shoot a pistol with a correct grip frame (I'm supposing the Uberti Leech & Rigdon is prolly more historically correct, so that would be the exception), I guess I'm just used to the Pietta grips, so they don't bother me

Whats more perplexing Captain is why Pietta has a more correct steel back-strap on their "London" model Navy! They may call it their "civilian" model can't remember.

Yes, oh, to be a fly on the wall in their executive conference room just to hear exactly what they are thinking?
