Jammed action on Colt 2nd Gen 1851
« on: April 21, 2014, 04:47:19 PM »
Fired my Colt 2nd Gen last weekend. Afterwards the hammer came back but would not go forward again. I disassembled the pistol for cleaning, and the single cap I popped fell out of the internal workins'. Problem fixed.

A very normal function on a Colt.

Just call me lucky. In all the years I've been shooting I've never had that happen. Had a few occasions where the gun wouldn't fire  because of a fired cap but its infrequent. Have just as many with Remingtons

Hi Lucky, I can't get through one cylinder with either my 1849, 1851, or 1860 revolvers. They all suck caps. On the other hand, I have fired thousands of rounds using my 1858 Remingtons without a jam or fail to fire. I now limit my Colt shooting to conversion cylinders that never fail to fire, and never jam.

You should buy a lottery ticket, you are bound to win. You get more karma from me for being so lucky!

Regards,
Richard

The only time i have ever had a cap jams was from using ill fitting caps.  I never jammed firing proper fitting caps from either Colt or Remmy.  Ill fitting caps, I've had jams on both flavors

I'm reasonably positive a cap was responsible for my "autofire" Dragoon adventure. Colts like to swallow caps. It's a fact.

I missed that adventure, how's about a recap.

Thank you for the link.  While I understand your actions, it would have been interesting to tear it down at the range to see what happened.

Too many opportunities for lost bits & pieces.....the loading tables are in an area of pine bark. Once you drop something it's gone forever.
