Someone did a pretty good job of defarbing this gun. I can't find any marks as to maker, Black Powder Only, date code, proof marks, nothin'. Only stamps that I can find are the C.S. on the frame, a number 76 on the bottom barrel flat next to the frame, and the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame.

Don't know about yours, Mazo...but the last (Pietta) S&B I held had such a tiny grip it felt like a Baby Dragoon almost. Smaller than my ASP Remmies. Makes me wonder how they shoot? Please do a review after you shoot yours!

Will do. This gun needed a little "loosening up" as it evidently hadn't been cleaned or lubed in a while. Joints and axles were dirty and dry. Working much better now. I may crown the barrel soon and put a bit more forcing cone on the barrel.

Hi mazo, I purchased an aged Spiller & Burr from Williejet on the Remington message board:

http://1858remington.com/discuss/index.php?topic=11144.0

It should arrive this coming week. A few things about it had me concerned. The quality of the dovetail, but I was told it was done by a gunsmith. The other issue is that Williejet opened up the area around the nipples to allow a snail cap loading. I hope the defarbing is of good quality.

I understand that the Pietta S&Bs shoot very high. Maybe having that dovetail sight will allow it to be a good shooter.

Did you do anything more on your S&B?

Regards,
Richard

Sadly, no. Just too much other  "stuff" going on lately. A friend and I have a range trip planned in a week or two, will take the S&B along.

I'll be honest, I've never understood aging a reproduction Italian BP weapon.

Hi, it seems that I'm not getting the Aged S&B after all. The seller became unhappy after I asked a question about the revolver. He suggested that I was having buyer remorse and that he refund my purchase.  I rarely have buyers remorse, but then again there's no deal I have to have. This deal was unwound.

Regards,
Richard

Hi, before I learned that my used Spiller & Burr purchase failed, I ordered this book:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0865545316/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I got a chance to look through it and it appears to be a must have book if you are interested in the Spiller & Burr.

Regards,
Richard

Never owned one and never shot one but Spillers sure look cool.  If one were going to copy something a Fordyce Beal design is a great place to start.

How much 3f is a safe but still meaningful load on those?  Is it accurate to infer that because of the top strap S&B’s will take a bit more powder than an open top brasser?

I use 15 grains Pyro P in my Griswold (.36) and don’t exceed 18 grains.  Am I missing out by sticking to that light of a load?  Is 21st Century gun brass underrated regarding what’s safe and sane?
