Shotgun powder solvents

Hi, I came across a reference where people are warned about using lead removing powder solvents to clean shotguns with two barrels and/or rail. It seems that powder solvents like Hoppe's #9 can ruin a double barreled shotgun. The issue is that the solvent attacks the solder joint between two barrels and ribs. Some of us have seen barrel and rib separation on doubles. It is highly likely that the problem was in the use of lead removing gun solvents and oil.

I thought it would be useful to pass along this information.

Good advice. I've never used solvent on the barrels of any double I've owned. I bought a bore snake that has two bronze brushes in it. I run it down the barrel a few times, right after shooting. It cleans the barrels perfectly.

I will still use solvent on the action, as long as it's not connected to the barrels.


Black powder is even easier. Hot water and Balistol do the trick.No solvent needed.

Thanks ssb but geez if it's not one thing it'll be another.  My German doubles are nearly antiques but of modern vintage.  As of today I will no longer use No.9 to help clean their bores.  Thanks for the info.

Ballistol works on everything the only cleaner I use on my guns.....PERIOD

Hi Hewy, Ballistol is also my goto gun oil, but not for my double barreled shotguns that have soldered barrels. Rem Oil goes on those. I think that WD40 would also be useful to put on doubles.

That sounds pretty sketchy to me. I've used a lot of Hoppes on a lot of doubles. The only one I've seen with rotten solder is an old Parker that was left exposed to the elements for a lot of years.
