Set up my trap line
« on: December 05, 2020, 03:01:26 PM »
....in the basement. This is the time of year when mice like to sneak in. I learned a few years ago to put a small eye screw on the mouse trap and tie a string through that and a shelf, etc. otherwise some mouse traps "disappeared"! L@J

Yessir, time to set up my basement trap line as well. Little critters don't like the cold.

Three traps sprung but empty today, but the traps were not in their original location. Hmmm, of course the cat thinks that is her own deli down there!

Have I developed a strain of super mice, are they using tools? Third day in a row with traps sprung, licked clean, no blood suggesting, the cat hasn't gotten to them.

What are you baiting the traps with Em? I have always used either peanut butter or flour. Peanut butter works good, because they can't grab it and run. They gotta fight with it to get it, and that usually sets off the trap.

You could also try making the trip mechanism a little more sensitive on the trap, so it goes off easier.

Problem with peanut butter is it hardens after a few days. Then you gotta clean it off and start over.

As fast as Em's mice are eating, I'd say that probably isn't much of a concern.

(7+" Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Yes, we use peanut butter. And those traps are sensitive. Sometimes the go off 2-3 times just trying to  put them (gently) in place! I can't believe we are talking about trapping mice!

If the hides weren't so darn small I think it would get a lot more discussion. Anyone ever tan a mouse hide?

No, I have never tanned one. I have seen a taxidermist mount though. We throw the mice we catch into the yard...the crows love 'em!

Thank you much. I sure think so. He is what you call a Blue Russian. He came to our barn as a wee little kitten just before winter a couple years ago. He loves climbing into my arms and go to sleep. He now has permanent residence in our home and so far he has 14 notches on his gun.

My trap line is up and running as of New Year's Day....found lots of mouse poop under the kitchen sink. Set up 6 new traps using peanut butter. New Year's morning found 1 dead mouse and FIVE traps licked clean! Reset the trap line today using pepperoni slices. I can't believe they licked those traps clean without springing them!

I'm not surprised at all. I always use peanut butter and many times I find the cheese holder licked clean but peanut butter is still king for presenting something that the mice like. I hate baiting traps with cheese, get the weight off a bit and the darn things seem to surprise you going off and trying to take your finger in the process.
