I got this relic condition SXS from a friend in 2016 (has it really been that long?!), worked on it to get all the parts free and functioning and then set it aside until now. It was rusty from sitting in a garage for who knows how long. The barrels were not on the receiver and wouldn't go on since the gun was so dirty. This is what the stock looked like when I received it.

I stripped what little finish was on the stock and forearm, then put it away. This is what the repair job looks like as of now.

wow... nice job so far Emery!!

I am also working on a shotgun at the moment... its a Hopkins and Allen SxS perhaps when the rest of the parts get here I will post a couple pics... no where near as nice a gun as the winchester was when they were new.. but it was available, so I grabbed it...

tell me about the barrels on yours? fluid steel? Damascus?

Looking pretty good Em! How did you repair that horrendous break in the stock?

The wood looks like it has some nice figure to it too. How's the forend look?

As for the repair.... I was going to peg and epoxy it, but ended up just cleaning the surfaces a bit, drilled some shallow 1/8"holes in both pieces and epoxied them together. I clamped them to hold them in place. I cleaned the stock up and now I am rubbing in some slow oil. Yes, the stock does have some nice figure, it is a shame it got broken. I will probably wrap the area with damp rawhide. I am considering Kevin's suggestion of wrapping with copper (or brass) wire also. The fore end is complete but is some what worn, like the checkering on the butt stock. The buttplate is almost mint (well in very nice condition). Barrels are Damascus steel. More to come later as I progress(?).

could I ask, How you came to the conclusion that the barrels are fluid steel?

i am gunna have to look at mine and I do t wanna do the acid thing. i am fairly certain mine are fluid steel as well, but gotta be sure.

Well, this is embarrassing!  :-[ I had it in my head the shotgun was a Winchester for some reason. Nope...it is a Remington. I was cleaning the barrels a bit with 0000 steel wool today and there it was...the name stamped in a little plate on the rib. That also revealed the (faint) Damascus pattern. I have gone back and corrected all those errors in the posts. Mark, you could do a tiny test on the bottom of the barrels under the forearm where it is hidden if it isn't readily apparent. Now, please put those ropes away! L@J

Hey, in my defense...I am an old guy! I had been working on an old Winchester a while back and guess that stuck in my memory. This Remington was/is a quality gun also.

I am debating whether to work on the repair to make it a bit better looking, or to do the rawhide wrap.
