As for the repair.... I was going to peg and epoxy it, but ended up just cleaning the surfaces a bit, drilled some shallow 1/8"holes in both pieces and epoxied them together. I clamped them to hold them in place. I cleaned the stock up and now I am rubbing in some slow oil. Yes, the stock does have some nice figure, it is a shame it got broken. I will probably wrap the area with damp rawhide. I am considering Kevin's suggestion of wrapping with copper (or brass) wire also. The fore end is complete but is some what worn, like the checkering on the butt stock. The buttplate is almost mint (well in very nice condition). Barrels are Damascus steel. More to come later as I progress(?).
