Anyone have a Pietta 1851 (Sheriff ?) renamed Marine 44
« on: September 10, 2017, 08:55:50 PM »
Another Pietta fantasy..........
So called 1851  4 7/8"  barrel on a full size frame  .44 cal.
I like the looks of it. Anyone shoot these ?

Really want to get a Pietta 1862 Police in .36 . Old South has
a Traditions ( Pietta ) with a lanyard loop on butt of grip. More than I want to spend.

i had the 60 snubby with the conversion cylinder i sold a while back... it shot pretty well, the recoil wasn't bad even with 255gn 45colt... i just didnt like the feel of the thunderer grip...

I have the sheriff, but it's a brasser. Slick as pig snot action, handles very well. Non-engraved cylinder. I like it a lot.

Well OK, but that Navy is a .44 and there weren’t none until the Italians had their brain storm and invented them.  Me, I got to have some history built into mine.  But if it floats yer stick - well and good.  It’s pretty though and does look like fun, I’ll admit it.  Congrats.

Your right Navy was really .36 . However Colt did build .44 only in a slightly larger version and  called it a Dragoon.

Actually, Colt did experiment with a .40 cal. Navy but it never made production.
Serial no. 1 had a 7-1/2" barrel
Serial No. 2 had a 6-1/2" barrel
Serial No. 3 had a 5-1/2" barrel*...right up your alley, Hewy!
Reddish Uberti-style  grips, steel TG and BS, non-rebated cylinder.
Apparently it was an overbore of a .36 cal Navy.
I would post a photo from the book, but it would probably violate copyright laws. Shoot me a PM if you want to see it...

Oddly enough the Pietta .44 Navy Sheriff looks a lot like the Cooper .36cal double action percussion revolver. I bet somebody out there could make a trigger and trigger guard and make the Pietta look like a Cooper.
