Official Conversion Picture Thread
« on: December 10, 2020, 11:47:16 AM »
I've noticed quite a bit of interest lately, all over the inter-webs, in conversion pistols. Seems they are gaining in popularity. I've even seen quite a few guests to our own illustrious forum, looking at conversion information. In that vein, I have a homework assignment for all of you. Should you choose to accept it of course.

To help out people looking into conversions, lets compile as many pictures as we can in this thread. We'll make it the official picture thread for conversions. I'll even sticky it to the top of the page. A lot of us have conversions, and have posted them before. But this will be a sort of "one stop shopping" kinda thread. Plus it will give us all an excuse to take some pics and post some new content. Not to mention have fun playing with your conversion pistol!

Post a picture or two and give us a quick rundown on your creation's specs.

I'll start it off in the next post.

My conversion started life as a Pietta 1860 Army, civilian version. I wanted the civilian because I didn't want the 4th screws on the frame for the stock. They're unsightly to me, not to mention in the way.

I used a Kirst gated conversion, in .45 Colt. It went on pretty easily, other than having to sand the cylinder face down a couple thousandths, so the cylinder would rotate properly. I just used some 400 sandpaper and a piece of glass. It didn't take much to make it work perfectly. I then just used BC Super Blue to touch up the cylinder face. This gun has had well over 1000 rounds through it now, with no trouble whatsoever. Most of those rounds have been in 80-120 round sessions. This pistol is fun to shoot!

As you can see, the barrel has been shortened to 4 1/2" which is just in front of the ejector rod housing. It has also been crowned. I know it's a little short for some folks taste, but it is perfect for my use.

The grips are my own manufacture and are from resin, then hand carved to look jigged.

It's a fun gun and doesn't look like anyone else's.

Bravo AntiqueSledMan! That's a real winner!

It looks like Mike put some of his buttons in the 4th screw holes too. That's a nice touch that really finishes off the look.

Very nice piece.

Looks really good, ASM! Of course, anything that comes from Goon runs like a Swiss watch!

Hello Mazo,

I think the Cylinder removal is like that of a Whitney correct?
Maybe you could show how it's done.

Thanks, AntiqueSledMan.

The arbor retaining "screw" doesn't get removed; it has to be turned "just so" (screw slot in a horizontal orientation) and the loading lever/arbor pulls out of the frame.
